Importance of the Renewable Fuel Standard
Since 2007, the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) has required that more renewable fuel be blended into transportation fuels. The increased use of homegrown biofuels has significantly benefited consumers across the country. A recent study done at Michigan State University shows the major benefits that Michigan consumers have received because of the RFS and it can be estimated that if the RFS were eliminated, Michigan would lose:
• $260.5 million in economic activity from lower corn prices
• $172.8 million in economic activity from reduced ethanol
production
• 288 jobs in the ethanol industry and general economy
